Compass ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use the Compass mobile application and website.

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following information when you create an account or use the app:

Account information: Email address, username, age, and password (stored as a secure hash)
Academic profile: GPA, test scores, extracurricular activities, and college preferences you provide
Usage data: Colleges, careers, and scenarios you save; daily task completions; XP and achievement progress
Device information: Platform type (iOS/Android) for analytics purposes
Camera access: Used only if you choose to upload a profile photo via your device's photo library or camera. We do not store or transmit photos to our servers.

2. How We Use Your Information

To provide and personalize the Compass app experience
To sync your saved data (colleges, careers, scenarios) across devices
To track your progress, streaks, XP, and achievements
To serve relevant daily SAT/ACT practice questions
To analyze app usage and improve our features (via PostHog analytics)
To send important app updates if you opt in

3. Camera and Photo Library

The app requests access to your camera and photo library solely to allow you to set a profile photo. This permission is optional — you can use all app features without granting it. We do not access your camera or photos for any other purpose, and photos are not uploaded to our servers.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your account data is stored on secure servers hosted by Render (PostgreSQL database). We use industry-standard encryption for data in transit (HTTPS/TLS). Passwords are never stored in plain text.

5. Analytics

We use PostHog to collect anonymized usage analytics. This helps us understand how features are used and improve the app. Analytics are disabled in development builds and do not collect personally identifiable information beyond your user ID.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. We may share data with service providers (Render, PostHog) only as necessary to operate the app, and only under agreements that protect your data.

7. Data Retention and Deletion

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by emailing us at support@getcompassapp.com. We will process deletion requests within 30 days.

8. Children's Privacy

Compass is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately.

Depending on your location, you may have rights to:

Access the personal data we hold about you
Request correction of inaccurate data
Request deletion of your data
Opt out of analytics tracking
